Homosexuality, an Immoral and Unnatural Orientation

An Immoral Orientation

The Bible is clear that, ever since the fall of man, all of humankind is innately sinful. Furthermore, the Bible specifically calls homosexuality sinful. It is an orientation against the law of God written on everyone’s heart and is called a “degrading passion” by God in His word.

Unfortunately, in trying to be helpful, some have suggested that sexual orientation should not to be considered a sin and that only homosexual activity is to be judged as sinful. However, if sin is being bent or orientated away from God and His will then isn’t that precisely what homosexual orientation is?

Also, regardless of whether or not the homosexual orientation of an individual is innate or chosen, like all sin, the practice of it is a rebellious choice that stems from a sinful nature. Just as an innately heterosexual man is not overwhelmingly compelled to have an affair with a married woman, regardless of how much he loves her, a homosexually orientated person need not outwardly comply with his sinful nature. Similarly, no heterosexual couple should have sex before marriage no matter how right it may seem to them.

Some contend that they don’t see homosexuality as sin. Who are they to dictate to God what is and isn’t sin, when He has already given us His view? And, God points this out because what He intends for each of us is far better than a life in sin, no matter how good it may seem.

An Unnatural Orientation

Concerning adultery, the Lord said that just to look on a woman with lust already constituted adultery. In other words, orientating oneself toward the sin was equal to the sin. But, unlike the sin of fornication or adultery, which are a moral compromise within the natural heterosexual order, homosexuality is more like paedophilia, incest and bestiality, which are unnatural to begin with.

Are we eventually going see P, I and another B added to the LGBTQ list, just so that those who are supposedly misunderstood as being deviant can be accepted?  Consider, for example, an article in the Telegraph by Andrew Gilligan, entitled, ‘Paedophilia is natural and normal for males’, which reports how ‘some university academics make the case for paedophiles’.

When it comes to psychological deviancy, it appears that what is normally considered unnatural is being deemed “natural” by virtue of it having occurred in the natural. We are being told to adjust what we consider normal to accommodate the existence and experiences of deviants. However, if, for example, someone was born without a nose, even though it occurred naturally, it would be “natural and normal” for humans to think, “That’s not natural!” or “That’s not normal!” Clearly, what occurs in the natural is not always natural.

It is God who decides what is “natural,” not us. And, He makes it very clear that mankind’s “natural” orientation is a heterosexual one. Within that boundary God then is clear that monogamy is His intention for those who wish to marry and that marriage is the only place for sexual intercourse.

Born Again and Transformed

We are all in need of a Savior to rescue us from our sinful nature and the consequences of having one. In other words, we all need rescuing from both our orientation to sin (which is sinful in and of itself) and also from the sins that come from our sinful orientation. If you repent of your sins and turn to God, He will forgive you and you will be born again into eternal life with Him. At that point, deviant mindsets that used to control you, no longer need to be the definers of the new you. Yes, they may tempt you, but they are no longer in charge of you. Christ is! In Him you are connected to a new source of life, God Himself. To the extent that you let Him, His Spirit empowers you to live in a completely new way. He is your new orientation and He resets all your faulty orientations toward Him. With God we can be governed by a new moral orientation, which is His Very Moral Being within us.

When we come to Christ, we are completely spiritually changed, being made spiritually new and alive to God. At this point we begin a journey of further transformation through the renewing of our minds and the putting to death of the improper impulses (lusts/desires) of the body. Certain unsavoury soulish and physical triggers may easily be activated by thoughts that still remain. These have the potential to lure a believer into sin. However, because a Christian has crucified their flesh, as long as they walk in the Spirit, these old ways need no longer influence a person.

In this sense, remnants of a homosexual orientation may still exist in the old mindsets and learned bodily triggers of Christians who were homosexually orientated when they came to Christ. Nevertheless, in Christ, such a person is no longer subject to the flesh (the pull of the mind and body) and is free to walk in the Spirit. In fact, they must, for walking in the Spirit is the Christian life. And, to the extent that they walk in the Spirit, they will be enabled to put to death the misdeeds of their bodies, renew their minds and be transformed.

Conclusion

Like a snake that strikes, it’s innate in humans to sin. This sinful nature is an immoral orientation that we are all conceived in and born with. While some are perhaps bent toward homosexuality at conception, others may have become corrupted by choice. Regardless of our sin or its origin, our inability to change is evidence of just how badly we need rescuing. Whatever your sinful ways may be, whether they are innate or learned, God can undo the consequences of the fall and give you a restored life.

Homosexuality is Unnatural and Sinful

The Bible explains that because of the Fall, all of humankind is innately sinful. More specifically, it considers homosexuality to be unnatural and sinful. Therefore, it stands to reason that an innate homosexual orientation (if it exists), or a developed one, is an expression of fallen mankind’s brokenness and sinfulness.

We All Need to be Rescued

All humans are born with a sinful nature and are inclined to sin in one way or another. Therefore, regardless of the particular characteristics of each person’s sinful nature, whether innate or developed, we are all in need of a Savior to rescue us from its awful consequence. These consequences include our separation from God, our inability to walk free of sin, and our inability to adequately make just amends for the wrongs of our past.

Is the Orientation or the Act a Sin?

In trying to help those who struggle with homosexual orientation, it has been said that the orientation is not a sin, it’s only the activity. However, this cannot refer to the lust of homosexuality, because lusting for something is considered by God to be equivalent to the sin itself. Nor, obviously, could it refer to the orientation prior to coming to Christ, because all sinful orientation is away from God, which is the essence of sinfulness. Instead, the only way in which a Christian can be legitimately associated with a homosexual orientation is when old mindsets and triggers still lurk as sources of temptations.

Our Old Orientation

Sinful orientation is not considered a personal sin if we refer to the intermittent pulls and temptations of the body and un-renewed mind in someone who has come to Christ. These old mindsets and bodily triggers no longer have control over the believer, because the Christian has crucified the flesh. However, they need to be dealt with or they can easily become sources of sin.

Alive, but Challenged

Spiritually, we are completely changed when we come to Christ. However, this begins a journey of further transformation through the renewing of our minds and the putting to death of the inappropriate pulls of the body. Certain soulish and physical triggers remain in the background with the potential to lure a believer into sin. Nevertheless, because a Christian has crucified their flesh, these old ways no longer have the ability to influence a person, as long as they walk in the Spirit.

Victory By The Spirit

It is in this sense that remnants of a homosexual orientation may still exist in a person (in their old mindsets and learned bodily triggers) who was homosexually orientated when they came to Christ. In Christ, however, a person is no longer subject to the flesh, but is free to walk in the Spirit. In fact, they must, for walking in the Spirit is the Christian life. And, to the extent that they walk in the Spirit, they will be enabled to put to death the misdeeds of their bodies and renew their minds and be transformed.

Forgiven and Empowered

However, just as everyone is likely to sin in the same area that they sinned before coming to Christ, it should not surprise us if a person who struggled with pornography has occasional lapses in the same area, or if person who was a homosexual is tempted by their old thoughts and bodily triggers. The good news is that if we have all the resources in Christ to overcome our internal challenges, and, even if we are entangled by sin, which the Bible says can happen easily, we can receive forgiveness, be restored and continue to walk in the Spirit.

Hallelujah!

Amen!

Blessings to all who are struggling in Christ,

Rob

Conceived in Sin and Iniquity

From conception we are all orientated away from God with an innately sinful nature. This may mean that each of us starts off life with any number of particular innate ungodly orientations. Therefore, if homosexual orientation is proven to be innate in certain persons, this should not surprise us. These orientations, whether innate or developed, the Bible calls iniquities, and are the personal predispositions or bents toward particular sin.

Objection

Someone may object, “Surely being born homosexually orientated legitimizes it. Also, how can such a person be judged if they had no part in being orientated that way?” Consider that we are all born with a sinful nature that we had no part in creating, yet our lack of participation doesn’t legitimize it. We will all be judged for our sins and iniquities inherited in Adam if we haven’t accepted God’s mercy and help in Christ Jesus, who died to forgive our sins and iniquities and give us a new life free from them.

Scientific Evidence

That said, the extent to which people may be innately orientated toward certain sins appears to be unclear. In fact, a report by Dr. Lawrence Mayer and Dr. Paul McHugh, entitled, Sexuality and Gender, maintains that the understanding of sexual orientation as an innate, biologically fixed property of human beings — the idea that people are “born that way” — is not supported by scientific evidence.

From Homosexual Orientation to God and Wholeness

Regardless of how a deviance begins, God can fix it. Whether a person had been born blind or became blind, Jesus could heal them. Similarly, God can heal someone with a homosexual orientation regardless of how it began. Now, while it is true that the blind are rarely miraculously healed (yet, if they have come to Christ they will most certainly be healed in the life to come), nevertheless, the morally deviant who come to Christ are immediately given a new spirit, a new heart and the Holy Spirit to help transform them through renewing any remaining innate or learned orientation.

Do You Want To Be Healed?

So, whether homosexual orientation becomes a part a person at conception or during development, whether inadvertently or through their own deliberate choices, it is just one of many deviances found in humanity’s fallen nature for which Christ died in order to bring forgiveness and restoration. Whatever the sinful orientation, like He did with the crippled man, Jesus is asking, “Do you want to be made whole?”

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

nDeBjaIResearchers’ Unscientific Beliefs

I put forward in a previous post, Prenatal Sexual Orientation Findings Confirm God’s Word, to the extent researchers’ beliefs concerning sexual orientation cited by Wiki were true, namely, that ‘sexual orientation is not a choice, and … established at conception’, that this would only serve to agree with God’s word concerning everyone having an innate sinful nature from conception.

That said, these researchers’ beliefs, along with other beliefs related to the LGBT community and touted by academics as truth, were exposed as being unscientific in a report by Dr. Lawrence Mayer, professor of psychiatry and statistics and biostatistics at Arizona State University and Dr. Paul McHugh, one of the world’s leading psychiatrists (psychiatrist-in-chief, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore from 1975 to 2001), entitled, Sexuality and Gender.

With regard to sexual orientation and gender identity, their conclusions were as follows:

  • The understanding of sexual orientation as an innate, biologically fixed property of human beings — the idea that people are “born that way” — is not supported by scientific evidence.
  • The hypothesis that gender identity is an innate, fixed property of human beings that is independent of biological sex — that a person might be “a man trapped in a woman’s body” or “a woman trapped in a man’s body” — is not supported by scientific evidence.

Brokenness and Innate Sinful Nature

If the above report is true, which I am inclined to believe it is, then gender confusion or homosexual orientation is a development from a person’s innate brokenness and sinful nature. However, if any innateness is found in homosexual orientation or gender confusion, it would still be explained by the fall of mankind and humanity’s inherited sinful nature. The only difference is that these traits would be understood as innate expressions of human brokenness and sinful nature rather than a later development from them.

So, whether gender confusion or homosexual orientation has any measure of innateness or not, God’s word explains their existence as coming from brokenness and/or sinfulness. As David says, ‘Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me’ (Psalm 51:5).

Prenatal Sexual Orientation Findings Confirm God’s Word

Research Confirms Prenatal Sin Nature

According to Wiki, ‘researchers…believe that sexual orientation is not a choice, and some of them believe that it is established at conception.’

To the extent that these findings are true, particularly in explaining homosexuality, they are a real God-send. This is because they agree with God’s word concerning the prenatal origin of our sinful nature.

In short, God’s word views all humans as sinful from conception and it also sees homosexual orientation as one of many possible sinful orientations in human nature. With that in mind, findings that point to persons being born (and even conceived) with a homosexual orientation are clearly a great example and proof of human sinful nature existing from infancy and even from conception.

Is God Being Unfair or Helpful?

The idea that homosexuality is an orientation that some are born with does not prove that homosexuality is not sinful. Neither does it prove that God would be unfair to consider this condition unholy. Instead, these findings discredit the notion that babies are born morally pure or neutral and should lead all people to realize their personal need for God’s help because of the sinful nature that they are born with.

Just as King David did when contemplating his sinful self, it would be a good starting point to recognize that “surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5 NIV).

Tired of Justifying Sin?

Are you tired of your old self and of trying to justify it? God loves you and wants to give you a brand new life. God’s way out of our sinful orientation is found in His offer of a literal rebirth and a transformation of our lives.

For the life that He has to offer you, take a look at my post The Good News of An Exchanged Life – Part 1.

Rob Morley

PS. That homosexuality is the focus of this post was just a natural outcome of considering the researchers beliefs cited by Wiki in the light of God’s word. This was posted with the aim of getting all people to consider God’s view of the origin of their sinful nature, though it may manifest differently, and God’s remedy for it.

It’s Queer to assume that we can Redefine Marriage

Male & Male He Made Them? http://www.rgbstock.com/gallery/weirdvis (Lynne Lancaster)
Male & Male He Made Them?

(Lynne Lancaster)

Isn’t it strange that people gaily, or is it ‘gayly’, go about redefining marriage to include persons of the LGBT persuasion when God clearly gave a woman to Adam as his helper and suitable counterpart (‘help meet’) for marriage.

GOD’S DESIGN

God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him”…So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man (Gen 2:18-22)

ADAM’S RESPONSE AND GOD’S WORD ON MARRIAGE

Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Gen 2:23 -24).

GOD’S LAW

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them (Lev 20:13).

JESUS – MARRIAGE IS HETEROSEXUAL

But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife’ (Mar 10:6-7).

NEW TESTAMENT – HOMOSEXUALITY AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due (Romans 1:26-27).

HOMOSEXUALITY, LIKE PEDOPHILIA

Because it was never in God’s design, homosexuality, like pedophilia, bestiality, adultery and fornication is destructive to the individuals involved as well as to a society that accepts it. It was for mankind’s benefit that these were spoken against in God’s word.

"Say stop to raping our morality under the name of freedom"
“Say stop to raping our morality under the name of freedom”

While I don’t necessarily advocate demonstrations like the one in the picture, nor do I support anything less than love for individuals who practice homosexuality, I like the truth in the caption which is a translation of one of the banners.

You see, many Christians have become confused and soft in their stance toward the sin of homosexuality. While on the one hand many see it as sin, on the other, they indirectly consent to it through not wanting to take away people’s rights to practice their “sexual orientation”. This is further fuelled by the notion that in order to be loving we should “live and let live” as long as it doesn’t affect others. But, is the negative effect of even a monogamous committed homosexual relationship only confined to the two involved?

Let’s consider who gets affected by someone practicing a homosexual lifestyle. Firstly, he is sinning against God and himself by denying the Creator’s design for his life. Then, just like with adultery and fornication, anyone who practices homosexuality is automatically causing his partner to sin and be missing out on God’s plan for his life. Finally, and what is often overlooked, he is sinning against the community by being a very likely, although not necessarily intentional, influence on others to do the same.

By allowing people to have homosexual relationships, whether monogamous or not, they become billboards that reinforce the idea that homosexuality is a viable lifestyle. Effectively we create an environment where other people can be more easily influenced into the same sin. Many people may fall as a result of the appeal that homosexuality may have on their sinful nature, while others may fall to the deception that homosexuality is a normal social way of life.

The permission to practice homosexuality, along with its promotion in the media and the prolific nature of the practice, can confuse and entice many vulnerable youth and adults into embracing what they may never even have thought of. Let alone the influence that it is having on kids growing up in this environment.

A few weeks ago a teenager who is very close to me and who has grown up in a Christian family and environment spoke to me of how he had wrestled with the question of his own sexuality and whether or not he was homosexual. I wonder to what extent the prevailing climate of open homosexuality that exists in this world has been an influence on his thinking.

As the ecclesia we need to be a clear voice of truth to a broken world. Love is telling the truth!

Seriously causing others to miss out on God’s best may be part of the reason for God’s harsh words and punishments for this crime. These seeds are sown all around. But woe to those whose seeds germinate! And, anyone who condones this practice is an accomplice. “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! (Luke 17:1).

I have a very dear family member who has lived an open homosexual lifestyle for years with one partner. I love both him and his partner and recognize that their sin is no different to mine. Our difference before God is not that I am not a homosexual or that I don’t sin anymore, but that I was given a free pardon for all my sins, past present and future, and am now joined to Jesus.  My sins and wayward nature are not held against me anymore and although I still easily sin, it’s not in my new nature to continue in it. And, God wants to do the same for them.

I don’t condemn any homosexual just as I don’t condemn any adulterer, but I do want to warn against the destructiveness of participating in this lifestyle, both to individuals and societies. It’s not the Creator’s plan for anybody!

Finally, some may need to repent of practicing homosexuality, others of supporting it, and others of not loving those practicing it. Whichever it is, God is willing to forgive.

Rob
